Artists that have influenced and inspired Johan over the years are many and varied, however the main influences have been artists like Michael Turner, Luis Royo and Andrew “Android” Jones.
These are names that have been a big inspiration and have been a part of defining Johan as an artist over the years. Not only artistically but inspiring him to reach for the goal of becoming a fulltime artist and illustrator himself.
Artistic education :
Johan have grown up drawing about as long as e he can remember. over the years while life has changed and careers pursued, drawing have always been something he has returned to. He started pursuing an art education seriously during his first year in upper secondary school. He also attended university college studying art.
Life happens and he ended up with an IT degree and worked in IT for several years. Despite this he still attended drawing classes and groups during this time.
In 2015 Johan decided to pursue his dream of becoming an artist fulltime no matter what. Realizing the 14 year old version of himself would be truly disappointed if he did not do everything possible to fulfill the one and only dream that mattered as an adult.
Re-educating himself as an illustrator fulltime he also studied Graphical Design for two years from 2015 to 2017.
As an artist constantly trying to improve his craft every waking hour is spent thinking about presentation and learning more about illustration, design and art. This demands commitment and time spent continuously working and learning.
Johan works as a freelancer as this lifestyle suits his pursuit in his endeavors to always create, and improve.
Artistic philosophy :
Problem solving is at the core of Johan`s philosophy. Solving issues artistically, philosophically or technically is a skill that he finds to be invaluable.
Truly thinking about how to achieve goals and then figuring it all out is what drives him.
It is a skill that may be applied to any and all walks of life.
“Once i went to an art school, whatever that means.
It is apparent to me that this is what i will spend the rest of my life doing.”
– Johan Torhaug.
